Apulian Bell Crater close to the Patera-Painter

Provenance: Private collection H. S., Vienna. Acquired from the parents of the last owner in 2000 at the Viennese art market. Accompanied by a copy of handover from the parents to their son.

Condition: The crater is intact, no over-painting. Old reparation on the base and some chipping to the rim.

Description: The front depicting a maenad and Dionysos. The maenad wearing a peplos, necklace, bracelets, and in her hair a stephane, in her left hand holding a thyrsos (a pole, as attribute for Dionysus or his maenad), in her right hand a mirror. Dionysos sits naked on his himation and holds out a patera to the maenad. In his right hand also holding a thyrsos. A branch between the figures. On the B-side two young men facing each other with sticks and himation on their shoulders. A dotted ribbon above the scenery, between the two figures a steep growing plant. A band of laurel below the rim, on the base a wave band to the left, which is rather rare. Richly ornamented with palmettes below the handles.
