Description: Impressive fragment of a Roman marble column with fluted decoration. The marble with red grain. Fluting has served as a decorative motif for columns since Greek times. It had no structural function, but was intended to emphasize the rise of the column and make it appear monolithic - even if it consisted of column drums. According to reports this exceedingly diligently worked out column fragment originates from Flavia Solva in the Roman province Noricum.
