Marble Head of Eros
Culture: Roman
Period: 2nd century A.D.
Material: Marble
Dimensions: 16 cm high
Price: Sold
Ref: 3278
Provenance: Belgian private collection prior to 1990, thence in a Belgian auction house.
Condition: Nose, lips and chin with some minor wear, otherwise intact and of most charming quality.
Description: Slightly smaller than life-size head of a youthful Eros with a smiling face and chubby cheeks. The eyes looking happily out of thick lids, the mouth slightly open with side dimples. His head and ears are covered by his hair with curly strands. On the calotte the hair is slightly towering towards the centre, typical for children’s portraits of the imperial period. Small perforations on the sides of the hair suggest some jewellery of a different material missing today. The back is roughly worked out and perforated. Possibly part of a sculptural group. Mounted.
